LIA to trim vegetation growth at Lordship Bluffs

Responding to this summer’s exceptionally fast growth of vegetation on the Lordship Bluffs, the Lordship Improvement Association (LIA) announces that it has contracted to cut the growth at the Bluffs’ edge to the ground this month - earlier than the traditional winter trimming - in order to clear the view of Long Island Sound from the Bluffs lawn and Park Boulevard (between Lordship Road and Spruce Street).

The project will also taper growth down the slope to the nature area’s central path. Non-native trees in the area will be leveled to the ground, with stumps remaining to decompose and enrich the soil. And to protect the Bluffs’ lawn during this operation, eight 3’ by 8’ plastic mats will continuously move under the cutting machine’s tracks.

Next year, the area of growth on the water side of the Bluffs’ central path will be monitored and trimmed as necessary – always with erosion control in mind.

The LIA Board is also preparing a Lordship Bluffs management plan involving identifying and removing invasive species, annual growth maintenance, and creating a safe environment for Lordship residents, wildlife and pollinators.

ABOUT THE LIA: Celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, the non-profit and all-volunteer LIA preserves and maintains the Lordship Bluffs and Russian Beach via a land trust for the enjoyment of Lordship residents. The LIA also created and maintains 8 public gardens throughout Lordship and conducts education and environmental projects.

Thanks for your continuing support of the LIA’s preservation efforts and overall Lordship beautification! https://bit.ly/LIA-ToDonate
